From February 12 to March 23, a traveling exhibition about female astronomers is open at the White Hall of the University of Tartu Museum. The exhibition is a part of the "Women in Science" theme week at the University of Tartu, held from February 10 to 16, aiming to underline the role of women and girls in science, break gender stereotypes and encourage women to pursue a career in science.
The exhibition AstrónomAs, which translates as female astronomers in English, showcases the extraordinary and meaningful contributions of women to the advancement of astronomy and the exploration of the universe. It also aims to spark young people's interest in science and astronomy.
The exhibition has traveled through various cultural centers, libraries, and schools across Spain and other countries, such as our neighboring country Lithuania, and has now arrived in Estonia. It was created by the Spanish Astronomy Society (SEA) and expanded to include Estonian astronomers by the Spanish Scientists Association in the Baltics (ACE Baltic) and the Spanish Embassy in Estonia, effort led by visiting researcher María Benito Castaño.
A comprehensive virtual version of the exhibition in Spanish is available online at AstrónomAs. Visitors can explore information about 270 female astronomers from around the world and their contributions to astronomy.
The exhibition will remain open on the balcony of the White Hall of the University of Tartu Museum until March 23.
